Lebanese resistance attacks occupation positions

Originally published

The Lebanese national resistance on Sunday paid last respects to two Lebanese citizens Qassem Ahmad Na'im, 23, and Hussein Ghassan Ghassani, 22, who were killed on Saturday's clashes with Israeli occupation troops inside the occupied Zone of south Lebanon.

Lebanese resistance men attacked two Israeli military positions in the Beer Kelab and Sujud districts. The resistance said in a statement that one of its combatant groups rocketed and machine-gunned an Israeli force inside Kelab and another one in Sujud. The two positions were directly hit and a number of reinforcements were destroyed. Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesman admitted the injury of an Israeli officer in an attack launched against an Israeli patrol inside the occupied zone.

Meanwhile, Hizbullah on Sunday warned Israel it will hit back on its northern territories if Israeli troops continue their attacks on innocent civilians in south Lebanon.

The warning by Hizbullah's south Lebanon commander came after bomb explosions blamed on Israel killed three Lebanese civilians Friday. Sheikh Nabil Kaouk said Israel was not only targeting civilians in Lebanon, it was doing it from populated areas in northern Israel, a violation of an April 1996 U.S.-brokered understanding.

The understanding, which ended an Israeli offensive on south Lebanon last year, forbids attacks against civilians on both sides of the border as well as shelling from civilian-populated areas.

A five-nation monitoring committee regularly meets in south Lebanon to discuss complaints and tries to ensure compliance with its terms.

Kaouk said Hizbullah had evidence that Israeli tanks were shelling south Lebanon villages from settlements in northern Israel. This behavior "will expose settlements of the enemy (Israel) to danger," he warned.

If Israel did not cease violating the April understanding, "we will be forced to return fire with fire," Kaouk said. His warning came during the funeral in Tyre Sunday of a Hizbullah guerrilla, one of two fighters who died in a clash with Israeli troops Saturday.

Hizbullah guerrillas have often launched Katyusha rockets into northern Israel after Israeli attacks on civilians in south Lebanon.
