Algeria succeeds in mediating between Nigerian government and opposition
Algerian mediation efforts led to easing of conflict between the Nigerian government and the two Nigerian movements, Union Is Strength and the Revolutionary Armed Powers after the conflicting sides signed an agreement protocol. This protocol is expected to put an end to the security problems in north Nigeria and will help in implementing the peace agreement which had been signed in April 25, 1995.
Three meetings were held under the auspices of Algeria, the last of which led to signing an agreement for the cease fire that will go into effect on November 29,1997. The agreement also stipulated releasing prisoners of war and preparation for disarming both sides' armed forces.
