Racism blamed for sacking

Originally published

Two Arab girls that worked in a chocolate shop in Tel Aviv said they were fired from their job because of their Arab identity. Kate Hanna of the village of Rameh in the Galilee and Doris Dorr of Nazareth appealed to the District Court of Labor in Tel Aviv demanding compensation of US $30,000 each.

They said the grounds for firing them were racist and demanded that the shop owner honor all their rights. The two girls said they had recordings of the shop owner who admitted to them that the only reason he decided to fire them from their work was because they were Arab, though they spoke fluent Hebrew.

It was when he heard them chatting in Arabic that he identified them and immediately took his decision, the girls said.
