Hezbollah chief to run for third term

Originally published

Hizbullah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah announced on Friday his decision to run for a third term for the position of secretary-general.

He said that the party's by-laws have been amended to allow such a move. In the past, Hizbullah leaders could run for only two straight terms as secretary-general.

He said a new Shura made up of seven members will be elected during the party's upcoming general convention. Only those who are elected in the Shura have the right to run for the position of secretary general.

In the case that none runs for the post, a secret vote would take place whereby members of the Shura would pick the person they think should be secretary-general, Nasrallah added.

The Hizbullah guerrilla group is fighting to drive out Israeli occupation forces from a border enclave they have occupied in south Lebanon since 1985.
