Egyptian opposition criticizes Israel's decision on war files

Originally published

The Head of the Egyptian Wafd Party and member of parliament Yassin Serag Al Din criticized Israeli practices after the Israeli government stopped its investigation into the massacres of the Egyptian prisoners of war by Israeli generals during the 1956 and 1967 Wars.

He said that the Israeli government refused the requests of the Egyptian government to hold trials for the generals responsible for those massacres. It also refused to compensate the families of the Egyptian victims.

He added that this case is governed by the rules of the international community expressed in the Geneva Agreement III signed in 1949 which stipulates protection for prisoners of war. According to this agreement, Israel is required to investigate those massacres immediately and arrest those responsible for them.

Yassin said that such cases are not dropped because of a time lapse, which was confirmed by Israel when it protested against the German government for declaring this when Israel requested that Germany compensate its citizens.

Yassin called on the Egyptian Foreign Minister to explain the steps that will be taken by the Egyptian government to encounter the Israeli decision.
