Moroccan party calls for boycott of November election

Originally published

The Pioneering Democratic Socialist Party called on Moroccans to boycott legislative elections which will be held on 14 November. The party considered the constitutional modifications that were applied in 1996 and which resulted in dividing the parliament into two councils as leading to autocracy.

The party specifically criticized setting up a second council which has the right to monitor and sack the government while the parliament does not have any virtual rights. The party also accused the Moroccan authorities of taking a neutral stance toward the violations committed during the voting process for these modifications.

The constitutional modifications which were passed through a public plebiscite stipulated setting up two councils; the first is the Parliament constituting of 325 members, the other is known as the Council of Advisors.
