Algerian terrorist attack thwarted

Algerian soldiers thwarted an attempted massacre by terrorists, the Algerian Liberte newspaper said yesterday.

Two rebels were shot dead and another three wounded in a village south of Algiers at the weekend, the newspaper said. Despite the soldiers' success stopping the massacre, opposition leaders as well as others questioned how rebels managed to slaughter villagers in hamlets near army barracks.
