Sudan's Christian Nubians being brutalized
An African human rights group said on August 6 that Sudanese forces have burned dozens of villages, looted cattle, raped women, kidnapped thousands of civilians and killed others in Nouba Mountains in southern Kordofan province in central Sudan.
The Nubian people who live there are Christian, and they have been fighting for 15 years to win increased autonomy from the Arabized and Muslim north.
The current government under the leadership of Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir has sought to Islamize and Arabize the Nuba.
Sudanese troops have targeted villages in the Nouba mountains and have mined roads to prevent people from returning home. 300,000 Nubians live in rebel areas.
