Gulf War Syndrome: A sting in the tail

Originally published

In the U.K. the Labor government stated that a new research program on the mysterious diseases suffered by ex-Gulf war soldiers is to start.

The new program is considered a real victory to those soldiers in their persistent campaign for official recognition of the "Gulf War Syndrome."

During the Gulf war, the troops used a combination of vaccines and tablets to protect themselves from chemical and biological substances, as well as desert insects. Side-effects like asthma, chronic fatigue, depression and skin ailments appeared, even serious birth defects in their babies were reported.

The government allocated $4.24 million to this research, particularly as 51,000 Britons served in the Gulf war and up to 4,000 veterans and their families have the illness.

The British Minister of Armed Forces declared: "We have a duty to discharge own responsibility in respect of those who have served their country. I aim to see we do just that."
