Bahrain is turning green on fishing

Originally published

Bahrain is to ban fishing trawlers in its waters to preserve the livelihood of traditional fishermen in the central Gulf.

Jassim al Qaseer of the agriculture ministry quoted in the Gulf daily news, said the ban would take effect in June 1998

Bahraini fishermen will only be allowed to use traditional traps, allowing fish stocks to be replenished and reefs to recover from the damage caused by large trawlers.

The ban on trawlers is also designed to encourage fishermen to switch from shrimping to fishing, while the season for catching shrimps is to be reduced to six months a year instead of the current nine months.
