Firefighters put out Sidon blaze

Originally published

Fire broke out in an abandoned lot in Sidon's al-Barred district on July 9 and threatened surrounding houses and a nearby gas station before firemen finally put it out.

The blaze, believed to be started by sun rays magnified by glass pieces, lasted for an hour and destroyed around 50 used tires which had accumulated in the lot.

Police sealed off the area, preventing civilians from approaching while firemen were dealing with the fire.

The head of Sidon's fire station, Adj Saadeddin Issawi called on citizens not to leave glass in the sun. " people should be aware that glassware, cigarettes butts and fires which are not totally extinguished are dangerous, especially in the summer," he said.
