Palestinians say Israelis ransack school, holy Koran torn
Palestinians said yesterday they found torn copies of the Koran (the holy book of Muslims) in a school they charged was ransacked by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank town of Hebron.
The town has been the scene of almost daily clashes since an Israeli woman put up posters depicting Mohammed as a pig stomping on the Koran nine days ago.
Doors to the El-Yaacobiya girls school were forced open, and furniture was turned over in two of three rooms, witnesses said.
They said four copies of the Koran were torn and scattered an the floor along with a pile of other books.
The school is located in an area where the clashes have taken place recently, said an army spokesman. In this area, confrontations have taken place in which Palestinian rioters throw stones, petrol bombs and recently bombs, one of which wounded two soldiers four days ago.
The army will conduct an inquiry together with the Palestinian Authority to estimate the damage at the school if such damage was done.
