UN says it is sending mission to Sudan
Hédi Annabi, the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping said that next week a mission will travel to Darfur and "will also conduct an assessment of the requirements of the transition to a UN peace operation should such an operation be established."
It was not clear if the mission has been approved by the Sudanese government to go to Darfur, or may face rejection as a previous mission had to. The UN Security Council had previously passed a resolution that mandated this evaluation mission take place within a set time, but Sudan rejected the resolution by did not allow it to take place.
This comes as another deadline has passed in Darfur, where the peace agreement that two out of the three rebels group were supposed by the May 31 deadline to sign but did not due so. Sudan Vision indicated said that those Darfur rebel groups continue their opposition.
