UN Security Council confusing statement on Darfur
The UN Security Council yesterday issued what seems like a confusing statement. The Security Council said it supports the African Union decision relating to Darfur Sudan foreign forces.
The African Union decision on the presence of UN forces in Darfur is that it should only be done with the consent of Sudan, and Sudan said it does not approve of UN forces on its land.
Yet, the UN Security Council statement, while saying it supports the African Union decision, says it wants UN forces in Sudan, which in effect, says we only agree with one part of the African Union decision, and not the important part of that same decision, which is Sudan's consent to any UN forces.
