Under absence of 11 foreign ministers, Arab council discusses voting mechanism

Originally published

Some 11 Arab foreign ministers were absent from a special meeting for the Arab League (AL) council concluded on Thursday in Cairo which discussed the mechanism of voting at AL establishments.

The close- door discussions sessions were attended by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Qatar, Palestine, Oman, Sudan, Djibouti and Jordan. Among the absent ministers were the foreign ministers of Syria, Lebanon and the interim Iraqi government, a matter which weakened the opportunity of discussing main issues on the Arab arena which are Syrian- Lebanese relations and conditions in Iraq.

Al-Jazeera satellite TV said that several ministers proposed for amending the charter of the Arab League concerning voting on resolutions and these proposals concentrated on that consensus should be the base for decisions.
