Bush warns of wider isolation for Syria over its position on Iraq, Lebanon

Originally published

The American President George W. Bush said that he is trying together with US allies to prevent Syria from obstructing the birth of democracy in the Middle East. He renewed accusations to Syria of facilitating the transit of foreign fighters to Iraq.

In a press conference followed his meeting in the White House with the Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani, Bush said on Tuesday he would discuss the Syrian issue at the UN summit with what he called the friendly countries.

Bush said that " the Syrian government can do more to end the flow of foreign fighters to Iraq, where innocent people are killed including Americans."

Bush warned Damascus that its isolation will be increased because of two factors. The first: its ill cooperation with the government of Baghdad in providing security to Iraq and the second is: the weakness of Syria's transparency in dealing with what it had carried out in Lebanon, in remarks to the assassination of Rafiq al-Hariri and the accusations addressed to Syria in not collaborating with the investigation.
