Barazani talks about the north's experience in democracy

Originally published

The Iraqi prime minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari headed for Britain after a visit to Kuwait and prior to attending the donor states conference to be held in Brussels at the level of foreign ministers. It is to be attended by 85 regional and international countries and organizations.

On the other hand, the new President for Kurdistan region, Masoud al-Barazani, stressed the possibility of disseminating the experience of "democracy and confederation" in the area to other parts of Iraq. He defended the experience of Kurdistan by saying "the experience proved that the literal translation of the confederation means federation, therefore anyone who thinks it means partition does not understand the true meaning of confederation." Al-Barazani's statements came at a time when talks are made by local officials in the governorates of al-Basta, al-Amara and Zee Qar of a Shiite majority over establishing a district in the south of Iraq similar to that already established in the north.

On the other hand, al-Barazani denied strongly reports published by the Washington Post on hostile practices conducted by the Kurds against the Arab and Turkish minorities in the district.
