Qatar wants Asia's non permanent seat at the UN Security Council
Qatar's permanent representative at the UN, Nasser Abdul Aziz al-Nasser, said that his country asked for having a non permanent seat at the UN Security Council for Asia for 2006- 2007 and that it has become the only candidate to that after the withdrawal of the Kingdom of Kapudia.
Al-Nasser said in an interview with al-Jazeera that the ambassadors of the Asian group at the UN met on Tuesday and decided to adopt Qatar as the only candidate for the Asian group at the UN Security Council.
Al-Nasser indicated that Qatar wants to occupy the seat dedicated for the Arab group which is being held alternatively between the Arab states in Asia and those in Africa and is currently held by Algeria.
The UN Security Council includes five permanent members: the USA, France, Britain, China and Russia as well as ten non permanent representatives elected by the UN General Assembly circulated on the world's continents to occupy these seats every two years.
