Originally published

Algerian sources said that the chairman of the economic and social council Muhammad Saleh al-Mantouri submitted his resignation from his post. A matter which was not confirmed by official sources.

The council is a consultancy commission with the mission of giving periodical reports on the work of the government. It includes representatives for the government and the trade unions as well as researchers and economic and social experts.

Mantouri's resignation came from the council several days after the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika announced an amendment to Ahmad O Yahya government.

Sources which stated the news attributed the resignation of the chairman of the social and economic council to differences with O yahya who got tired of the remarks made by the council and the criticism made by Mantouri to the performance of the government.

The recent report by the council noted a violation in all economic activities and structural problems that impede reforms despite positive economic indicators.
