Karami fails to form a government
Sources in the office of the designated Lebanese prime minister expected he will reject to form a government after he had failed to convince the opposition to take part in a national unity government.
The opposition's rejection to join a national unity government is the reason behind this step, Karami said after meeting Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri.
In light of that, a mini government is expected to be formed from neutral figures that win the confidence of all sides or the government's opponents and supporters in order to supervise the next parliamentary elections which the opposition wants to be held in its set date.
Until the last moments, Karami considered that the critical conditions of the country needs a rescue operation in which all can take part. Should he apologize for forming the government, the president of the republic will be obliged to make parliamentary elections in order to choose another figure.
Karami's government resigned on February 28th following strong pressures including demonstrations of protest led by the opposition in the streets of Beirut following the assassination of the Lebanese former prime minister Rafic Hariri.
The opposition which blames Syria and its allies in killing Hariri, refused to take part in any government before holding the parliamentary elections in May. Elections which are threatened to be postponed unless a government is formed as soon as possible.
Sheikh Naem Qasem, deputy secretary of the Lebanese Hizbullah party stressed that all evidences show that the national union government will not see light.
