Two former Moroccan Guantanamo detainees released on bail

Originally published

The Appellate Court of Rabat decided Monday to release on bail two Moroccans who were detained in the American base of Guantanamo before being handed to Moroccan authorities last August.

The two individuals are Benchekroun I., 26, and Mazouz M., 32. Three other former Guantanamo detainees have already been freed on bail.

The court, which decided to postpone hearing in the case till July 4, had organized a confrontation between the five men and Noureddine Nifiaâ who is serving a 20-year sentence for belonging to the "Moroccan Islamist Combatant Group." Nifiaâ denied, however, having any links with them.

The defendants are facing different charges including "belonging to a criminal group, non-denunciation of crimes undermining the security of state, transfer of funds to Moroccans that set up a criminal gang to damage Morocco's interests and passports forgery."
