Arabs support Egypt nomination to permanent UNSC seat

Originally published

Permanent representatives to the Arab League share an agreement to support Egypt's nomination to a permanent UN Security Council seat in case of enlarging its membership, Arab sources said Thursday.

Discussions among the Arab representatives underlined the need for an Arab action at the international level to support the Arab nomination of Egypt to assume a permanent membership of the council, the sources added.

Arab ambassadors referred the issue to the Arab foreign ministers for them to submit the matter to Arab leaders at their summit slated for Algiers on March 22-23.

Discussions on an Arab vision of reforming the UN revealed concurrence on considering the Arab states as one bloc to be represented by the Arab group at the UN.

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has said that discussions do not revolve round a competition among the Arab states in this respect, but rather envisage the type of nomination, either to a permanent seat or a four-year term to be renewed through the UN General Assembly.
