Government adopts draft bill on political parties

Originally published

The draft bill on Political parties has been adopted by the Government council, meeting in Rabat Thursday, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Driss Jettou, announced Moroccan Minister of Communication and government Spokesman, Nabil Benabdallah.

Speaking at press briefing following the meeting, Benabdallah recalled the speech delivered by King Mohammed VI at the opening of the fall session of the parliament, last October, in which he urged MPs to endorse this bill aimed at "rationalizing, renovating and protecting the national political landscape." This bill, he said, would enable "political parties to draw their juridical legality from their democratic legitimacy."

According to the minister, the bill was couched in concert with the different actors in the political spectrum, taking into consideration political parties' suggestions that tend to simplify the procedure of creating parties in accordance with the principle of freedom while cutting short the phenomenon of "political transhumance."

Morocco accounts for some 32 political parties of which 6 are represented in the 35-member government.
