No contradiction between Islam and modernity, King's advisor

Through the adoption of the new Family Code, Morocco has achieved a progress in religion by jurisprudence, said Zoulikha Nasri, Advisor to King Mohammed VI, in an interview with the French TV LCI.

"There is no contradiction between respecting one's religion and advancing in modernity" she explained.

Indeed, she went on, the Family Code makes a direct interconnection between the progress of Morocco and women's rights, pointing out that the Moroccan woman is now an active participator in efforts to attenuate poverty and combat illiteracy.

Nasri stressed the need to appropriately train judges and create special structures -- now reached the number of 70 -- as a requisite step to implement the provisions of the new law.

The Moroccan official said that, a year after the adoption of the New Family Code, divorce files increased, whereas cases where the women would "buy" her divorce have decreased.
