Some 61,500 families will be housed in the two new ambitious housing programs launched Tuesday in the Southern town of Laayoune, costing MAD 3 billion, about 300 million euros, said minister delegate in charge of housing, Ahmed Taoufiq Hjira.

Hjira made the statement at a ceremony during which recipients received keys for 1,287 houses, part of the relocation plan of Al Wahda camp of Laayoune.

The minister explained the first program, under construction, will house 21,500 families and is expected to cost MAD 1.5 billion, while the second program to cost MAD 1.4 billion will host 40,000 families.

The 1,287 houses handed to owners on Tuesday are part of the first program and will be paid only half of their price, while the rest will be paid for by the State.

The assistance and efforts made by the State in building the houses in the country's Southern provinces are exceptional, said Hjira stressing the need to keep on developing the town of Laayoune and see to the respect of the local architectural patterns.

The Moroccan official also said the town is pursuing a drive meant to eradicate unhealthy housing, adding some 1,500 lodgings are halfway of completion and 1,000 land plots are available to people wishing to acquire them.
