Egypt approves convention on prisoners exchange with Morocco

Originally published

The Egyptian parliament approved on Sunday the convention on the exchange of prisoners signed with Morocco in January 2004 at a meeting of the Moroccan-Egyptian high commission.

The convention concerns all persons condemned to prison terms under the two countries' legislations. It stipulates that inmates must have the Moroccan or Egyptian nationality, and that their transfer be made under their full consent. The remaining of their prison term must not be less than one year after the submission of their demand.

In exceptional cases, the convention allows the two countries to transfer prisoners even if the remaining prison term is less than one year. Prisoners cannot refuse their transfer once approved by the two countries.

The convention on prisoners exchange is part of 19 other conventions signed between Morocco and Egypt, including nine judicial accords.
