Annan does not see a quick solution for the crisis in Darfur

Originally published

The UN secretary general Kofi Annan expressed his optimism over the prospects of finding out a quick solution for the crisis in Darfus, considering that the situation there reached a deadlock because of the increased violence and transferring it into other adjoining areas.

Annan said in a report he submitted to the UN Security Council on Friday that the situation in Darfur has reached to a "political bottleneck" and that the armed groups are rearming themselves and the conflict exceeded the boundaries of Darfur to oil rich neighboring Kordovan where two rebel movements have been formed.

Annan said that large amounts of weapons enter Darfur and this is a violation to the UN Security Council resolution 1556, adding that the intensification of the acts of violence including air attacks are a witness on the deteriorated situation, considering that the pressures already made have not yielded yet and that "necessary measures should be discussed to improve security and protect the displaced and evacuees." Annan's report came just days after a call made by the UN Security Council to reconsider its position from Darfir question, refusing simultaneously an American request to head for the area.

So far, Washington failed to endorse a decision at the UN Security Council carrying a frank threat to impose sanctions on Khartoum which is accused of supporting the Jangaweid militias in Darfur. This is because of the opposition of each of Russia and China to such sanctions.
