Khartoum: A peace agreement in Darfur within two months

Originally published

The Sudanese minister for humanitarian affairs Muhammad Youssef Abdullah said yesterday that Khartoum will conclude within two months a peace agreement with Darfur's rebels.

The minister indicated that the agreement might be merged by a vaster constitutional reform targeting other areas in the country. Abdullah explained before journalists during a visit to the UN offices in Geneva that "we do expect to reach a solution in Darfur within this context during the two coming months." He added that settling the disputes in the south will open the way before reaching a peace agreement in Darfur, noting that the two agreements are "interrelated."

For his part, the US ambassador to the UN John Danforth said after the UN Security Council heard a report that indicated to the worsening situation in Darfur: we did not accomplish anything in Darfur. We have tried every thing including scaring them to encouraging them but we accomplished nothing. Danforth who recently resigned his post shortly said "the report we have heard today is very worrying." He accused all sides of causing the humanitarian crisis in the district and called for putting on trial by the international community all those who are responsible for the crimes committees in Darfur.
