African forces proceed slowly to ease situation in Darfur

Originally published

The African Union force of which some 700 troops were so far deployed in Darfur, west Sudan, is making all efforts to monitor the fragile cease fire and bring back security and order in the turbulent district, situated to the west of Sudan.

Heavy duties are waiting for these forces even after the completion of the deployment of the African Union force with the fall of next February, of 3320 troops including 2341 soldiers and 815 civil police members, composed from several African states.

Despite the limited deployment for these forces, its presence gives a sort of feeling of safety within the relief commission in their effort to transport aid to the hot bed area in Darfur. They hope these forces will ease down fighting and enable reaching the destroyed areas.

Another responsibility shouldered by these forces is challenging the kidnapping and stealing operations in Darfur. The rebels are held responsible for the wave of the operations of kidnapping and holding government and civilian officials in Darfur.

The Rebel Sudan liberation movement in Darfur held high-jackers responsible for the kidnapping operations.

In an attempt to accelerate the work of these forces and evaluate its performance, the commissioner for peace and security in the African Union Saeed Janit has been visiting Sudan since Wednesday, according to sources in the African Union.

Janit, who went to al-Fasher on Thursday, said that due to lack of improvement of the humanitarian condition in Darfur as a result of the repeated violations of the cease fire, he encouraged the African Union to accelerate the process of its forces re-deployment in Darfur.
