Morocco welcomes adoption by UN Security Council of resolution 1570
Morocco welcomed the adoption by the Un Security Council of resolution 1570 on the Sahara issue calling for "putting an end to the current impasse and for advancing toward a political solution," a communique of the Moroccan foreign ministry said on Monday.
The security Council confirmed the assessment of UN Secretary general on the current deadlock following divergent positions on the second Baker plan and asked again the parties and the States of the region to keep on fully cooperating with the UNO to come out of the impasse.
Though the resolution is clear, Morocco is surprised by the misleading interpretation made by Algeria on the subject at a time the Security Council did not validate the second Baker plan and never asked for its implementation.
The UN security Council, which extended by six months the mandate of the UN mission in the Sahara (MINURSO), asked the parties to make the most of the six additional months to cooperate with the UNSG and his special representative to overcome the deadlock.
Instead of responding positively to the clear call of the Security Council, Algeria unfortunately prefers to continue to block the situation by requiring acceptance and implementation of the plan.
Morocco reiterates willingness to cooperate with the UNO and all other parties to reach a political, lasting and compromise solution in the respect of its territorial integrity and national unity, the official communique says.
