Originally published

The Government Authority for Development for East Africa states IGAD announced that the talks between the Sudanese government and the southern rebels which were suspended in Ramadan will be resumed by the end of the current month in Nairobi.

The regional commission which runs the mediation between the two sides said that the negotiations will be resumed on November 26 but the two heads of the negotiating delegations will join the table of negotiations on December 11.

The commission added that the two sides agreed to convene the negotiations in this date after the UN Security Council will hold its regular meeting in an attempt aiming at pressuring the two sides to finalize the agreement.

The two sides headed by the Sudanese Vice President Ali Othman Muhammad Taha and the leader of the southern rebels John Garang separated on October 16 at the beginning of the month of Ramadan without maintaining an understanding on a ceasefire nor a comprehensive peace. However, contacts at a lower level continued between the two sides.

The two sides said after the suspension of the negotiations that they have achieved a progress on the ceasefire arrangements. It was also agreed to maintain cooperation concerning the armed militias in southern Sudan and redeployment in east Sudan.
