Polisario can turn into a "radical Islamist international," Professor
Rabat, Sep 10 (MAP) - French geo-politician Aymeric Chauprade warned of the risk of the conversion of Polisario into a "radical islamist international," adding that the possibility of the separatist group, that is fighting Morocco over the Sahara, becoming a recruiting pool for terrorists is real.
Chauprade on Friday told "L'Economiste" newspaper a local group, which barely exists and whose numbers have dwindled, can be recruited by a kind of "an international banner of Islamism."
Currently, extremists are forced to find a new substitute ideology and new "godfathers," the geopolitician said, adding the danger of being recruited by islamists and by a radical transnational ideology exists.
"The risk, evidenced by some recent elements: immigration and the flow of Sub-Saharan immigrants supports this thesis È, he said, adding another indicator is that young pro-Polisario Sahrawis, attending Algerian universities, have been imbued by islamist ideology. All these factors are a real liability likely to convert Polisario into a "radical islamist international."
The West should be aware of the danger and take a decision on the issue and "declare clearly the Moroccan sovereignty" over the Sahara, the academic said, noting that the West should also make it clear to Algeria that the Sahara is Moroccan. The stance of France is clear in this respect, he went on.
If the United States could pressure Algeria, "this would settle the problem," he said.
Chauprade gave in Casablanca on Thursday a conference on "Terror and Crime Geopolitics."
