Mauritanian- Kuwaiti agreement to finance agricultural project
Mauritania and Kuwait signed an agreement at a cost of $ 2 million in the course of the second part of the emergency program laid by the government to fight drought especially reclaiming new agricultural lands and improving the production of cattle fodders and improving agricultural productivity.
The agreement was signed by the minister of economic affairs and development in Mauritania, Seidi Weld Didi, and the deputy director of the Kuwaiti fund for Arab economic development, Hamid Suleiman Omar.
The Kuwaiti fund for Arab economic development had financed or co-financed more than 11 projects in Mauritania at a cost of $ 170 million, since April 1975 up to date.
The recent key developmental projects financed by the Kuwaiti fund for Mauritanian was the project providing Nouakchott with portable waters from Senegal river which separates Mauritania and Senegal, and more than 200 Km from Nouakchott. The two sides signed this agreement by the end of March this year at a total cost of $ 34 million.
Mauritania suffers from the consequences of drought resulting from desertification.
In repeated calls, Mauritania appealed the international community to fight the waves of "locust" which frequently invade the country.
Despite the arrival of aid from the Arab Maghreb states, however "Locust" raids increased the pace of drought and desertification in this country.
Worthy mentioning that Kuwaiti- Mauritanian relations continued until the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in 1990, when these relations were affected because of Mauritania's stand with Iraq in the beginning of its occupation of Iraq.
