Turabi's party denies involvement in disturbances attempt
The Sudanese government accused the Sudanese People's Congress party led by Hassan al-Turabi of " conspiring to implement disturbances operations " and detained 14 of its members.
A statement issued by the Sudanese ministry of the interior accused some of the said party leaders of contacting neighboring states in order to get weapons and training so as to carry out what it called disturbances acts.
The official in charge of external relations in al-Turabi party Muhammad Elamine Khaleifa stressed that several members of the party were detained in raids on Tuesday midnight, including prominent figures. He indicated that the " authorities had earlier fabricated the same story of a damaging conspiracy and said that they will send them to the court immediately, but such accusations are mere pretexts."
Saddiq al-Turabi, the son of Hassan al-Turabi denied involvement of members of the party in any coupe or damaging attempt, considering that the government is used to holding members of the party responsible for its mistakes.
The government had banned the activity of al-Turabi's party in March following accusation to a group of army officers, members in the party of conspiring to assassinate notable government figures.
