Annan on amending the Lebanese constitution

Originally published

The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan recalled his position in which he called the world governments not to " amend their constitutions in the service of one person," but Annan said in remarks to recent developments in Lebanon " It is a question of specialty of the government concerned."

Replying to a question on amending the Lebanese constitution, Annan said talking to journalists at the headquarters of the UN in New York after his return back from vacation " it is a matter that concerns the government concerned." He said " But I had the opportunity recently at the African Union summit to remind governments and their peoples not to violate the constitution and not to amend it for the interests of one persons."

He continued " constitutions were drawn to serve the nation for eternity." He continued: the officials have " to abstain playing with the constitution and the conditions they agreed upon before assuming their posts."
