Iraqi government postpones the detention of Ahmad Chalabi
The spokesman for the chairman of the Iraqi National Congress party Mithal Allousi announced that the Interim government postponed detaining former members of the governing Interim council Ahmad Chalabi.
Allousi indicated that Chalabi was not briefed on these accusations after his return back from Iran on Wednesday. The Iraqi government accuses Chalabi of counterfeiting Iraqi currency and marketing this money.
An Iraqi judge issued a decision earlier this week to arrest Chalabi. Chalabi returned back to Iraq on Wednesday after a visit to Iran. hHe said accusations addressed to him were politically motivated.
Chalabi accused members in the former Baath party of being behind the crisis because they -- as he alleged -- blame him for bringing in the Americans to Iraq.
However, Salem Chalabi, the nephew of Ahmad Chalabi was also accused of being involved in the assassination of the former director general of the ministry of finance Haitham Fadel in April. Salem presides over the special Iraqi court specialized in the trial of Saddam Hussein.
Salem Chalabi who is currently in Britain said that the accusations addressed to him is an attempt to " violate the sovereignty" of the court he presides over. The US foreign offices rules out that London will hand over Salem to Iraq, noting that no standing agreement with Iraq on handing over convicted persons.
