Morocco, Senegal and Mauritania set up cooperation consultation council

Originally published

Mauritania, Morocco and Senegal have decided to create a "consultation council of North Atlantic African countries" and open a sea line servicing the three countries, announced on Friday Senegal's president Abdoulaye Wade.

The council will meet twice a year to discuss political, economic and cultural cooperation between the three countries, the president told foreign reporters in Dakar.

It will seek to consolidate cooperation between Mauritania, Morocco and Senegal, said the president who explained that the sea line to link Moroccan economic capital of Casablanca, to the two Mauritanian major cities of Nouadhibou and Nouakchott and the Senegalese capital of Dakar will transport goods and people.

He also said the private sector might join in this important project that he hoped will be as successful as Air-Senegal, born three years again from a partnership between Moroccan carrier "RAM" and the Senegalese state. The Senegalese company is now the first airline in west Africa.

He also cited as other key projects carried out by the three African countries the Trans-Saharan road that will link Tangiers (northern Morocco) to Dakar via Mauritania.

The announcement was made two days after King Mohammed VI paid a visit to Senegal, last leg of an African tour that included Benin, Niger, Gabon and Niamey.
