BBC: Martian rock found in Morocco Atlas mountains
A team of researchers has confirmed that a rock, found in the Moroccan Atlas mountains in 2001, is from planet Mars, BBC has reported.
"The rock was picked up by a local worker on an isolated plateau in the Atlas mountains at a location which is now being kept secret because of fears it may be spoilt by visitors," the same source pointed out, explaining that meteoroids can be easily spotted because they are dark in color whereas rocks in the region are mostly light.
"For 30 years the locals have been searching the region for fossils so they know the area very well," member of a meteorite hunter team, Bruno Fectay, told BBC, adding that "a few years ago we taught them to look for meteorites."
The rock, that "would have been blasted off the Red Planet by an impact, may hold clues to Mars' watery past."
