UN former Secretary General Kurt Weldheim said that he is deeply worried over the conflict between "the logic of force" and the "power of logic" prevailing nowadays, asserting that the world is becoming less tolerant but more arrogant and stubborn.

In an interview issued yesterday with Damascus-based al-Baath newspaper, Weldheim said that during the last few years "we have lost the most important requirement of peace and justice, through the absence the important role of the United Nations and international law."

Weldheim called for reviving the pivotal role of the UN in solving the world conflicts.

Regarding the Middle East conflict, Weldheim asserted the importance of the implementation of the UN Security Council's resolutions No. 242 and 338 and the "Land for Peace" principle.

In response to a question on the so-called Syria Accountability Act, Weldheim said "It is very difficult to believe that Syria constitutes a threat to the American military and political power," asserting the important role of Syria in establishing a settlement to the Middle East conflict.

Weldheim underlined the right of the developing countries to possess nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and to develop its economy, but not for military purposes.
