Egypt has top priority in Mexico strategy towards Africa and Middle East
In an interview to Al Ahram, Mexican F.M. Louis Arnesto Darbees highlighted Egypt's important position in his country's strategy towards Africa and Middle East. Following is the interview text:
ÊÊÊ Q: How do you view the importance of bilateral relations between Mexico and Egypt and how to boost them in different fields?
ÊÊÊ A: Egypt topped the strategy which President Festeeni Fox's government adopts for rapprochement towards Africa and Middle East. Since 55 years ago when the diplomatic relations started, the two countries have had the ability to make a strong friendship and cooperation which we have renewed to cope with changes in the world order.
On the political level, both Mexico and Egypt are keen on the continuation of the dialogue in different issues about the bilateral as well as multi-lateral affairs. This continued dialogue has been lately consolidated during meetings of the two countries' foreign ministers on the sidelines of meetings held in world forums and agencies of UN and WTO. This continued dialogue could outline joint agreement which was translated into joint initiatives and various projects.
Besides the political relations between the two countries, there must be a reciprocal trade on between both of them. As the exchange volume now is too little and they can develop it a little bit more. Technical cooperation as well as the scientific one and which already increased during the last century should be further activated.
Q-What are the practical steps needed to reinforce trade and economy cooperation?
ÊÊÊ A- As I already mentioned that the trade exchange volume between Mexico and Egypt now is too little as it does not exceed 20 million dollars in the last three years. However, I am convinced that there is potential for development between the two countries and which can be used according to businessmen abilities from the two countries to take advantage of investment chances which are already present.
