US congress delegation visits Damascus

Originally published

The arrival of the new US ambassador in Damascus Margaret Scooby next month coincides with the arrival of the US Congress delegation to convene meetings with Syrian officials, at a time when amendments were introduced to the "Syria Accountability Law" that permit a vaster margin for dialogue.

News reports in Damascus said that a delegation from a Congress committee will visit Syria in the framework of a tour which will cover also Iraq. The delegation is composed of ten members of the congress. It is expected to meet with President Bashar al-Assad and foreign minister Farouk al-Shara before the end of the month, if a change will not be made in the programs of the two sides.

A well-informed source said that other delegations will visit Syria during the two next months at a time when the new American ambassador Margaret Scooby will assume her new post in Damascus by the beginning of December.
