Bashir warns against attempts to foil the peace process; Turabi calls students to carry 'correction revolution'

Originally published

The secretary general of the People's Congress party in Sudan, Hassan al-Turabi, urged students to make what he called a revolution to correct conditions in Sudan.

Turabi, who was talking on Saturday before a conference for students who are rallied under his party, denounced the laws which restrict freedoms on which he said that the government applies in the name of religion. He also accused the government of feeding the tribal conflict in Darfour area.

The Sudanese authorities released Turbai and all political detainees from his party in the mid October. Under the directives of the Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, a presidential decree was issued for re-opening the general headquarters of the People's Congress and the re-issuance of its special paper.

Turabi was the master mind of the al-Inqaz ( salvation) regime and was its spiritual and political reference before differences erupted between him and the Sudanese President al-Bashir on the ground of laws that dimish the rile of the central authority in the provinces by electing their governors apart from the control of the President of the republic, in addition to the conflict of the two men over leadership of the state.

Because of this dispute, President al-Bashir decided in December 1999 to desolve the National Council ( the parliament) which was presided over by Turabi. Bashir also ordered to arrest Turabi in February 2001 after the People's Congress party lead by Turabi approved an agreement with the southern rebels.
