Libyan embassy to be opened in London within weeks

Originally published

A Libyan official has unmasked that his country is about to reopen its embassy in London, where it has now only a diplomatic representation mission.

The British daily Sunday Times quoted the spokesman as saying that negotiations are being made with the Sultan of Brunei over a building the Libyan government intends to take as a headquarter for its embassy, noting that the value of the building which is situated in the heart of Kensington and Chelsea classy area is estimated at 15 million EURO.

The British paper expected, according to confirmation from sources close from Sultan of Brunei that the contract will be signed shortly.

The former British embassy in London was closed in 1994 after the killing of a young British police woman in front of the building. Accusation said the young woman was killed by the bullet of a Libyan diplomat who opened fire at demonstrators objecting to the Libyan regime.

Nobody was tried over this crime, and diplomatic relations resumed between the two countries only in 1999. Since then, Tripoli has had only one diplomatic representation mission in Kensington quarters.
