Sea resources in Mediterranean at risk

Originally published

Participants in a meeting on sea resources have voiced concern over the risk of their "over exploitation in the Mediterranean sea," urging all countries to address with "responsibility and resolve" the management of these resources.

"The general Committee of Fisheries for the Mediterranean" (CGPM) which wound up, here Saturday, its 28th session, adopted a set of recommendations aiming at preserving sea resources in this sea. The committee also called for granting a special interest to studies conducted by experts and by scientific and technical groups on the "delicate" situation of the Mediterranean marine ecosystem.

The CGPM which contributes by its recommendations to the international Action Plan against illicit fishing, also proposed that the Rome-based Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to hold a scientific seminar and workshops to identify mechanisms to combat illicit fishing.

Morocco was re-elected chairman of this 24 member-countries Committee created in 1949 with the aim of safeguarding sea resources in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
