Moroccan southern provinces delegation visits Chili, Mexico

Originally published

A delegation representing the population of the Moroccan Southern Provinces will start this Sunday in Santiago a visit to Chili and Mexico to explain the latest developments in the Sahara issue, particularly the dangers underlying the latest version of the Baker plan.

The delegation will confer with officials, deputies, media and humanitarian NGOs and hand them a memorandum wherein the Sahara populations reject any solution that does not respect Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and territorial integrity.

The memorandum says the latest version of the "settlement plan" mooted by the UN secretary general's personal envoy and former US state secretary, James Baker, "would exacerbate tension and lead inevitably to inter-tribes war and instability in the region." Five Latin-American countries, namely Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, have recently reiterated their support to Morocco in the Sahara issue.

Morocco and the countries of the region had signed in 1999 a memorandum of understanding and of political consultation between their foreign departments.
