Originally published

The government is preparing a new draft law on granting Egyptian nationality for the offspring of Egyptian mothers married to foreigners as instructed by President Hosni Mubarak in his speech at the closing session of the 1st annual conference of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

In line with Mubarak's instructions to Interior Minister Habib Al-Adly, the sons of Egyptian mothers married to foreigners will automatically acquire Egyptian nationality by birth like the case with the offspring of Egyptian fathers married to foreigners.

Until Thursday noon, the passport and citizenship department received 2,000 applications.

An official said the Interior Minister will grant Egyptian nationality only to the sons who came of age and resided in Egypt on a permanent basis for at least 10 years.
