Maher calls for restoring Palestinian sovereign rights

Egypt's Foreign Minister, Ahmed Maher has stressed the importance of restoring the Palestinian people's legitimate rights and establishing the Palestinian independent state.

In a statement in Damascus on Sunday before heading to New York, he called on the United Nations to shoulder the responsibility for pushing the peace process in the region forward.

He pointed out that he will meet Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan in order to discuss with him the latest developments of the Palestinian cause and the Iraqi issue.

He added that he will also meet members of the US Congress to whom he will explain the dangerous situation in the Palestinian territories asserting the necessity for pushing the peace process in the region forward.
