Egypt's Tourism Minister Mamdouh El-Beltagui said on Wednesday night that 623.000 tourists visited Egypt in July, the highest number of foreign arrivals in the country in one month.

More than 651,000 tourists visited Egypt during the month long Shopping and Tourism Festival which ended on Wednesday, Beltagui added. Tourist nights hit 4.8 million, up 78.7 per cent against the corresponding period of last year, the minister said.

He said that three months after the US-led war against Iraq, the Egyptian tourism was showing signs of recovery. Beltagui was speaking at the opening ceremony of the annual Cairo International Song Festival.

Tourism is one of Egypt's key foreign currency earners and has weathered several storms over the recent years.
