Kuwaiti intellectuals call for reconsidering the constitution
Kuwaiti intellectuals and university graduates yesterday called for reconsidering the Kuwaiti constitution which has been laid since 40 years, noting that this should be made in the context of the political and economic reforms needed in Kuwait.
The call was made in a petition carrying the signature of more than 50 former ministers, parliamentarians, businessmen, university graduates and political activists.
The signatories called on that the new constitution to have a larger margin of freedoms and people's participation in the political life.
However, work in the Kuwaiti constitution started in 1962 upon the country's independence and since then basic laws were not amended.
The signatories of the petition also called for the right of woman to take part in the political life and to reduce the age of voting which is now 21 years as well as approving the principle of political pluralism.
