WFP fears starvation in Sudan
The UN World Food Program has stated that thousands of Sudanese are facing danger of starvation as malnutrition rates jumped to hit close to similar figures of 1998 when starvation hit the main areas in the country.
The program said in a report from Geneva yesterday that the basically deteriorated situation as a result of decades of civil war has greatly deteriorated as a result of floods which swept areas mainly in agriculture to the east of the capital Khartoum.
However, the spokeswoman for the WFP said that its ability to provide support is limited because of the weak response to its call it had advocated in April in which it called on the international donors to provide 130 million dollars to help 3.2 million Sudanese inhabitants. So far the WFP received 40 million only which means that food shares allotted to people in need should be reduced.
